John Mocettini is the Southeast Produce Council’s 2019 Vorhees Vision Scholarship winner.
Winning a $5,0000 scholarship, Mocettini is the son of Paul and Karen Mocettini at Salinas, Calif.-based Muzzi Family Farms, a grower, shipper and wholesaler of arugula, Brussels sprouts, mesclun and spinach.
The scholarship rewards young people who demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit as they pursue their educational goals, according to a news release. It’s named after the late Terry Vorhees, the council’s founder and first executive director.
Scholarship winners must have a parent or grandparent who has been on the council membership roster for at least 12 months and attended at least one council event within the past 12 months, according to the release.
Applicants must be either graduating high school seniors or enrolled as college freshmen, sophomores, juniors or seniors and must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Other selection factors include: letters of recommendation; SAT or ACT scores; leadership and community service; and the quality of an essay, covering a time they failed and how that failure affected them.
